Sand Dollar Sea Glass
Handmade Jewelry and Gifts
Wire Wrapped and Drilled Designs
I’m listing the Gulf Coast as a
single category, and it is only on the list because I use a lot of
sea glass from our area.
Glass is not plentiful here in the
way that it is in the other places I have mentioned, and I’m not
suggesting that anyone should come from far away to hunt for beach
glass.
However, you can find
glass on just about any beach, and you can improve your chances with
the
right combination of features.
Look near places where there have
historically been concentrations of people, such as ports or
jetties, and where there is some surf from time to time.
Look for the shingle.
On the gulf coast, you can often
find areas where the shoreline has been scoured out by storms.
I walk miles on the
beach near our home at Surfside Beach, TX, and usually pick up one or
two pieces over a day’s walk.
However, if you want to find larger
quantities, you can try the Bolivar Peninsula to the east or
Sargent’s beach to the west.
It will be mostly “craft grade”
glass with lots of greens, browns and whites, but you can sometimes
find some nice pieces.
At High Island on Bolivar, east of the
intersection of highway 87 and 124, the road used to continue
eastward along the shore but was mostly washed out many years ago.
You could still drive a car
(carefully) on it at my last visit, (I have not been there since
Hurricane Harvey).
Sargent beach is just east of
Matagorda bay (look for Sergeant Joe Parks, Jr. Memorial Highway on
Google Maps).
Searching for glass
in your “home waters” is fun, and best of all, you can do it more
often.
When you find a good piece, its
rarity makes it more special!
Please come to one of the venues and we can
trade information on our glass hunting trips!
